GOV. ROUNDS SUPPORTS SOUTH DAKOTA TRAILS

PIERRE – Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that more than $200,000 is available for local trail projects throughout South Dakota. The funds are available to cities, counties, civic organizations and tribal governments through the federal Recreational Trails Program.

"Recreation trails are key elements to a healthy community," said Rounds. "They provide a safe corridor in which families can exercise together and enjoy some of our state’s most unique natural features. In more urban settings, these trails can also provide safe passage for people walking or biking to work and school."

The Recreational Trails Program provides up to 80 percent reimbursement for approved trail projects. An application packet is available from the state Department of Game, Fish and Parks in Pierre. The application deadline is Monday, April 5.

For more information, or to receive an application packet, trail sponsors may contact Trails Program Specialist Scott Carbonneau at (605) 773-3391 or write to: Dept. of Game, Fish and Parks, State Trails Program, 523 E. Capitol Ave., Pierre, S.D. 57501
