What is everyone thinking about the fish kill in American Fork Creek? How was there not someone babysitting the contractor making sure something like this doesn't happen?!

With the work that is going on up there this was something that was going to happen. They will do their job and in time the creek will go back to the way that it was.

This kind of thing has happened before and it will happen again...Dams don't last forever. Amercian Fork Creek has too much fish in it, every hole was loaded with stunted, skinny browns. Maybe a fish die off will allow the surviving fish to get some better size to them. They are browns, they will repopulate in no time, and it will be as if nothing happened. It's not like they were native cutthroats or something. Besides, at this point they haven't determined exactly whether the dead fish were coming from the reservoir or the creek (both have wild browns and the reservoir fish are identical in size to the stream fish below).

This happens every time there is work done on dams. It happened on the Logan when the lower reservoir was drained several years ago and the Little Bear River when Porcupine was drained. There is never any communication between the various government agency's involved in these projects.

The Blue Ribbon Advisory Council funded a project years ago for USU to come up with a procedure for draining reservoirs to minimize the damage. I'm not sure if any of the groups involved are aware of this or even care.[mad]
